King of the Beach, the new Wavves album is an adventurous and ambitious record. It cuts deeper into the bleeding throat zatharsis and '60s sunshine soul that Wavves is known for. It also unexpectedly flips out with elements of primitive electronics and psychedelic studio experimentation. Unlike Wavves' previously released material, recorded in I haphazard bursts on Williams' laptop, King of the Beach was toiled over for three months at Sweet Tea Recording, a world-renowned studio in Oxford, Mississippi. Sweet Tea is also the home of Dennis Herring, producer of the last two Modest Mouse albums, and the man who dismantled and re-assembled the sound on this record.

Summary: "Forget being a surf cd this is the perfect 80's retro cd!"

I had a friend turn me onto the Wavves who told me they were a great band who had a beach vibe to them. I saw the album cover and my first thought was this was going to be some clever tunes if they were going to mock M.I.A.'s album cover. The cd does pack a potent laid back vibe but if your idea of surf tunes is Jack Johnson than stay away. However if you are a fan of 80's music such as Echo and the Bunneyman, Gene Loves Jesabel or New Order than this is the greatest cd to come out in the last 15 years. It really is has a solid 80's feel to it and so far I have played it for several people and they agree that it is fresh and modern yet still stays true to the 80's feel. I am sure this cd will be played in my stereo well past the end of summer.

Summary: "KING O' THE SUMMER"

Best album of the Summer, hands down. If you don't catch this tour this year, you're a damn fool. Spit in your face Punk Rock with an indie flare/surf-rock overtone. Again, their live show in Chicago was unreal.

Summary: "Shameless Fun"

Couldn't and can't stop listening to it. It makes you feel cool, almost like a surfer, but like the lead singer of this band, you don't actually surf, instead you think of how you might one day be able to be really really good at it, but instead, you're afraid of the water.

Summary: "Solid progression for Wavves"

I won't spend a ton of time here but I have liked Wavves sound since the first time I heard them. I have a soft spot for the surf aesthetic and I love fuzzed out guitars, so Wavves was ahead of the game with me right away.
The first album had moments that really caught your ear but the were fleeting. Even the best sprouts didn't quite grow to maturity. This time they are bearing fruit...While there is still room for improvement, there are still dead spots, King of the Beach is an album rather than a sketch.

Summary: "Addictive"

"King of the Beach" is like the Beach Boys, the Shins' "Oh, Inverted World" and Surfer Blood's debut album wrapped up into one highly addictive package. The Wavves early work consists of largely inaccessible (though definitely worth checking out) recordings free of any fancy production equipment. This album peels away the noisy layers and broadens the vision, allowing more of us humble listeners to participate in the ongoing dance of musical innovation.
